چکیده

Older adults have specific needs reflected by their everyday activities and use of technology. We briefly present elders' cognitive, physical, and sensory characteristics, then describe their impact on fundamental needs. Based on this information, we discuss dedicated services that exploit wearable computers, and the proper design of such systems. Our most significant contribution is to provide the first overview of third age persons' specific needs in wearable computing.

Simulation for Inclusion... True User-Centred Design?

Ergonomics continues to offer useful contributions to the inclusive arena; anthropometry data, guidelines for designers and usability research. One particular tool, the ‘Third Age Suit’, commissioned by Ford to raise awareness of the physical capabilities of older users (‘Third Agers’) has raised considerable media interest. There are, however, limitations to using wearable devices like the sui...

Reflections on a concurrent design methodology: a case study in wearable computer design

At Carnegie Mellon, we have designed and manufactured three generations of wearable, mobile computers. Each new generation of wearable computer has been designed within approximately one semester by an interdisciplinary design class taught at the Engineering Design Research Center (EDRC). Over the semesters that the course has been taught, an interdisciplinary concurrent design methodology has ...
